Hands of the Past
Hands of the Past, Bronze. 7” x3”. Commissioned by American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education.
Hands of the Past is a series of 25 bronze vessels created as gifts for conference speakers. The client commissioned MFASC to develope a work of art that represented the gift of knowledge as it is passed on, from one generation to the next. The client envisioned a gift for their presenters that would be more substantial than a plaque or trophy. MFASC worked with the AAHHE to create bronze vessels that showed an impression of the sybolic hand prints of previous generations of educators. Each bowl was one of a kind, each one having a slight variety in the detail and patina to create a one of a kind gift that avoided the slick aesthetics of the traditional "crystal" trophies.

This site specific sculpture was created to adorn the newly refurbished swimming pool complex. Its color scheme was chosen to reflect the colors of the poolscape. MFASC was commissioned to create a sculpture that also functioned as a shade structure. With this requirement as a starting point MFASC used the suns daily movement to crate a daily shadow migration of local bird shadows. Creating an aesthetic effect that provides relief from the sun for those not directly enjoying the pool. Each of the bird silhouettes represents a South Texas bird that can be found in the Corpus Christi area.
By using the image of local birds in a flock, the imagery represents the strong community of south Texas, Corpus Christi, and the Collier pool area. Its elevated design gives it a striking presence during the day and night. By elevating the sculpture MFASC was also able to greatly reduce the potential for vandalism and personal injury. It keeps lines of site open for patrolling police officers and parents.
